Allegory is literary fiction that comments on actual events, people, or elements of the human condition, challenging us to question and rethink the way we view the world. Allegorical stories often use symbolism and metaphor; they contain characters or objects that personify specific human qualities; and they have a moral. Classical allegory began in ancient Greece with the epic narrative poems of Homer. Plato, Cicero, and Augustine used allegory to comment on the political, religious and social issues of their eras. Dante's epic poem, 'The Divine Comedy', John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress', explore heaven and hell. C.S. Lewis's 'Chronicles of Narnia' were a biblical allegory. In William Golding's 'The Lord of the Flies' children explore issues of human civilization. George Orwell's political allegory, 'Animal Farm' explores themes of corruption and power. And Margaret Atwood explores the oppression of women in the dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale.
