In 1870, Manitoba became Canada's fifth province, and the only one to join Confederation under Indigenous leadership. It was home to many indigenous peoples for thousands of years, but the Hudson's Bay Company disregarded indigenous sovereignty. Today July 15th is celebrated as an anniversary of the reclamation of Rupert's Land from HBC, not as a birthday, out of respect for the original inhabitants.
