Folklore and folk tales are part of an ancient tradition of storytelling in cultures worldwide. Music, songs, riddles, proverbs, rhymes, and stories express the beliefs and practices of ordinary people. Folktales often use rhythm and repetition of phrases, contain characters who represent a single attribute such as good or evil, and generally end with a lesson learned. 'The Origin of Fire', is a native American folktale; 'The Rabbit in the Moon' appears across Asian and Central American cultures; the clever spider Anansi came to the Caribbean from Africa; and in Europe the Brothers Grimm collected folk stories such as Cinderella and Rapunzel. Folktales are told for enjoyment and they connect us to the beliefs and values of our ancestors.
