The buckskin drum has been the heartbeat of Indigenous music for eons. At the native-run Manitoba Buckskin factory Drew sees how traditional drums are made. A symphony orchestra percussionist demonstrates how natural skin drums produce a much warmer sound. Drew creates some "beats" with Anishinaabe hip hop DJ "Boogie the Beat". The Eagle Woman Singerz play ceremonial songs on the big drum which was traditionally played by men. MJ Dandeneau creatively meshes Métis fiddle tunes with modern sounds. Blues/rock and roll legend, Billy Joe Green from Shoal Lake, channeled his residential school bitterness into music. Native music is changing tempos. In Going Native, celebrated humorist and author Drew Hayden Taylor examines the stereotypes and traditions of Indigenous identity while discovering cool new ways Indigenous people are shaping their culture in the 21st century.
