All across Canada Indigenous people have sacred ground and sacred places which need to be protected. In 2017, the Indigenous Circle of Experts convened gatherings to talk about facilitating Indigenous led conservation based on their relationships with Mother Earth. Target 1 is Canada's commitment under the United Nations convention on Biodiversity to protect 17% of the land and inland waters by 2020. In the spirit and practice of reconciliation, there is an opportunity to work collaboratively with indigenous nations to create new protected areas to conserve ecosystems and culture while reaching our international biodiversity targets.
