When the lost tomb of King Tut was opened in 1922, a 3,000-year-old teenager became a celebrity pharaoh. English Lord Carnarvon was fascinated by Egyptology, funding archaeologist Howard Carter's search in Egypt's Valley of the Kings for a pharaoh's lost tomb. A local water boy found the cut stone that led them to Tut's sealed tomb and treasured gold objects. The media promoted the idea of the Curse of King Tut when Carnarvon died soon after. 1920's fashion, movies, and architecture were all influenced by Tut-mania, and the 1976 Tut treasures tour attracted over 8 million people. The mask of King Tut became a revolutionary signature in Egypt's 2011 Arab Spring. The great pharaohs were hoping for eternal life, but it is young, insignificant Tut who is best remembered today.
