Myths and legends are traditional stories that date back to ancient times. Myths are often closely tied to an ancient religion or set of cultural beliefs, explain the unknown, use symbolism and imagery to express ideas or teach a moral code, and are usually packed with supernatural beings, monsters, or mythological creatures. A legend is a story from the past thought to be based on historical fact but exaggerated with every retelling. In an Asian myth a Jade Rabbit befriends the Moon Goddess, and 'Icarus' flies too close to the sun in a Greek myth. The Greek legend of Atlantis may have started with an actual sunken city, and King Arthur may have been based on the life of an ancient Welsh king. In the U.S., people tell the myth of Paul Bunyan, a giant lumberjack and his pet Babe, the blue ox. Myths and legends entertain us with rich imagery and create a cultural tradition for all to share.
