Satire is a literary style that uses humour, exaggeration, and irony to raise questions about society. Satirical writing uses humour to expose political or social issues, and criticize people, events, or movements. It began with Ancient Greek writers' plays and Roman poets, Horace, and Juvenal mocking public figures and belief systems. Chaucer satirized the inequalities of English society and Shakespeare used satire for social and political commentary. Jane Austen satirized high society in her novels, Mark Twain ridiculed society for its treatment of women and African Americans, and Oscar Wilde teased English upper classes in his plays. Today, satire continues to thrive.
