How could democratic societies claim to support equality while holding humans in bondage? In ancient Athens there were more enslaved people than citizens. Slaves were not considered equals. 2000 years later Europeans relied on the work of enslaved Africans in the colonized Americas, and it took four years of civil war for slavery to be abolished in the US. The fight to overcome the prejudice and inequalities created by slavery continues today.
