Zambia's Luangwa Valley is home to some of the most iconic African species, but it is also teeming with a host of smaller animals. These often get overlooked, but it is they who keep the whole show on the road. They fertilize the earth, pollinate the plants and keep things clean. This intricate network of plants and animals connects in this remarkable ecosystem. Baboons, squirrels and beetles find nutrition in elephant dung. Baboons spend most of their days foraging over wide areas, distributing undigested tamarind seeds and dropping various fruits along the way which feed other species. Vervet monkeys have distinct alarm calls for different predators, alerting many other species of approaching danger. Squirrels are also important alarm raisers. Herbivores convert energy into meat for carnivores. Predators like the praying mantis, hyenas and lions are signs of a healthy and biodiverse ecosystem. Vultures are an important part of nature's waste management system. Hippo dung deposited into the river each day provides food for fish, who in turn keep storks and herons fed. Water plants also feed many species, and are spread in waterways by animals. Birds feed no mammalian parasites, and termites also have their place in the ecosytem. It's hundreds of wild web connections that make this ecosystem work.
