Growing up on a farm in Kenya where a woman's place was in the home, Wangarĩ Maathai came to understand the connection between people and nature. She studied biology abroad and returned home determined to reconnect people with the land, and promote restorative agriculture.  She was a pioneer, a mother, an environmentalist, and a global citizen celebrated with a Nobel Peace Prize for her holistic approach to sustainable development.
