For the empirical formula of a substance, divide the mass of each element by its mass number to give the elements in their lowest ratio. For the molecular formula, divide the relative formula mass by the empirical formula mass then use the answer to multiply up the empirical formula and give the exact number of atoms. Examples with animated diagrams are hydrogen peroxide and tin chloride. A mass spectrometer is needed for this process.
