W5's Sandie Rinaldo explores the treatment of cancer in dogs and research into these treatments is providing hope for their human counterparts. Max, a golden doodle, developed osteosarcoma. At the animal cancer centre at the University of Guelph, scientists are studying translational medicine, are doing comparative oncology, and hoping that animal treatments can help develop new human cancer treatments. Genetically, dogs are similar to humans, and have similar diseases. An animal hospital in Colorado Springs discovered a cancer fighting bacteria mixture that doubled the survival rate of dogs with bone cancer, and it also later proved to be successful in humans. At this hospital, researchers are trying to determine the cause of cancer by studying a large population of golden retrievers. They hope to find new cures as a result.
