Electrolysis is the breakdown of an aqueous or molten ionic compound when an electric current is passed through it. Two rods, electrodes, made of non-reactant materials, are placed in the aqueous or molten substance - electrolyte. When the electric current is turned on, negatively charged ions move towards the positive electrode and positive Ions move towards the negative electrode. Animated graphics illustrate the process.
