The Māori people first arrived in New Zealand around 1320 CE. They grew and hunted food and lived in tribal families with inherited stories. Europeans brought new farming ideas and also weapons, leading to many intertribal battles. The Treaty of Waitangi brought peace but left the Maori tribes with little else. Maori traditions remain alive despite their having assimilated European ideas and language.
