Parents are a child's first educator. The years in which a child's brain has the greatest growth are the first years from birth to when they enter school. They will be shaped by experiences with their parents (or those serving as their parents). Therefore, just as we focus on building the capacity of our traditional school-level educators, we must also focus on building the capacity of those adults serving as parents to current and future students so that when the children enter our schools for the first time they are as prepared as possible for learning. This book provides not only a strong theoretical framework for the practices described, but also firsthand guidance from a highly effective practitioner. Although there are other books on family engagement, few, if any, are so strategically tailored to get at the specific challenge and opportunities faced when trying to build parent capacity leading in inner-city schools
