Orchids are amazing. Over 25,000 different kinds can be found from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America. Some live in trees, others on rocks or in the ground. In Ontario, there are over 50 different species of orchids living in bogs, swamps, forests and meadows. Of these, 19 are species of risk. Habitat loss and alteration, as well as illiquid collection, are the main threats to their survival. They are very picky flowers. They need the specific sunlight, moisture and acidity in the soil. They need a very specific type of fungi that they form a symbiotic relationship with. So that in itself is difficult to do because if a little seed is flying and it lands in an area where those specific fungi aren't available, then that little seed and that orchid won't be able to grow and to survive. Wapalong First Nation, or Bekezhenon is home to over 70 of Canada's species at risk. Some are not found anywhere else in Canada, including the white prairie gentian.
