In 1948 London, Queenie Blight takes in Jamaican lodgers. Among her tenants are Gilbert and Hortense Joseph. Hortense shared Gilbert's dream of coming to England to start a better life, but she is shocked at London's shabbiness and horrified at the way the English live. The novel tackles themes of empire, prejudice, war and love.
