Natalie is a nurse and an officer with the Canadian forces in Afghanistan. She has fallen in love with René, a tank driver, and they plan to marry when their service is over. Louis is a poor teenager who joins the Canadian army at the beginning of World War I and sees action in France and Belgium. He is wounded and meets a young Acadian nurse in the army hospital.
