Rose is still young and pretty, but her existence is defined by immigrant poverty and a loveless marriage in rural wartime Ontario. Then passion and hope burst into Rose's life in the handsome countenance of Bobby, a Black man whose grandparents fled to Canada through the Underground Railroad. Rose and Bobby's friendship grows into a dangerous love affair and now Rose is pregnant, but how can they live together in a community that cannot accept a union between a white woman and a Black man?
