It is the day after the Second World War is declared in Canada, and Sandy Gray, who has been an air cadet, wants nothing more than to enlist. Sandy's father, a fundamentalist preacher, won't give him permission to fight because he believes the world is living through the "last days." When Sandy's attempt to oppose his father and his fundamentalist upbringing turns violent, Sandy is incarcerated in an asylum for the criminally insane.
