Summary for Waging peace: Caledonia Junior High has the reputation of a tough school; Edy Guy-François, the new principal, is determined to change that. Facing violence and disrespect, she starts with stricter, more even-handed enforcement of school rules, support for the teaching staff, and the introduction of a peer mediation program. Monthly school dances, a successful winter carnival, and recognition of student accomplishment improve morale, and students begin to work in groups on projects that they feel will address their concerns. Caledonia becomes a different school, and one the students are proud of. Summary for Learning peace: Chronicles a year at Annapolis East Elementary in Middleton, Nova Scotia. Thanks to an anti-violence program introduced in 1996 by principal Heather Harris, bullying and fighting have become a rarity. Over the course of the year, it becomes clear that peace is hard work -- but well worth the effort.
