The civil war in Ethiopia and Eritrea lasted for decades after the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie I. In 1976 the author, with the help of the legendary freedom fighters of the Eritrean Popular Liberation Front (EPLF), escaped to the Sudan after having lived most of his life in what became two war-torn countries.
