Now known as Buxton, the Elgin Settlement is one of the few remaining Black Canadian settlements still in existence since the pre-Civil War era. It is a community, which has, to a large extent preserved the co-operative way of life with which it was begun. In 1999, the Government of Canada recognized its significance in this country's history by declaring Buxton a national historic site.
