From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. You don't have to be in advanced math for algorithms to have an impact on your life. In simple terms, an algorithm is the set of instructions that determines how your computer software behaves. On social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, the algorithm determines which posts you see and in what order. It also decides which posts you don't see. So, while you may think you're getting an unfiltered view of the world when you scroll, in fact, your social media experience is being carefully curated.

Forensics is the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from a crime scene. DNA helps forensic scientists assist criminal investigators in solving crimes. Graphics, diagrams and video inform us about the history of criminal investigations, including criminal profiling, polygraph tests, the discovery of DNA structure, crime scene investigators (SCI), and genetic genealogy collection. Forensic scientists use fingerprinting, toxicology, serology, pathology, anthropology, DNA analysis, computer file analysis, and ballistics to solve crimes. We see examples of cases where forensic sciences were crucial and where DNA tests proved that people were wrongly convicted. Justice can be served with DNA technology.

Imagine what it would be like to travel somewhere if there were no bridges. You would run into trouble at the first little stream. Bridges are essential structures that help us cross obstacles like ravines and rivers. When building a bridge, it's important to choose the right materials and design depending on the environment and load. In this film, you'll learn more about different types of bridge construction. Beam bridges, which consist of beams supported by pillars, are a basic and cost-effective type of bridge. Arch bridges, with a history dating back to ancient Rome, give stability through their curved shape. Suspension bridges, like the Golden Gate Bridge, use thick cables to support the bridge deck. Other types of bridges shown in the film include vault bridges, cable-stayed bridges, truss bridges, and movable bridges like drawbridges and swing bridges, which allow boats to pass. So, next time you travel somewhere, look around and see how many bridges you can spot.

We also learn about the different subgroups: monotremes, marsupials and placentals. Did you know there are more than 4,500 different mammals in the world? What do they have in common, what traits do they have and what is special about them? We will see examples of different mammals around the world.

The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards a person can receive. In this film, you'll get to know the man behind the prize: Alfred Nobel. He was a Swedish scientist who lived in the 19th century and made a huge fortune from his groundbreaking invention - dynamite. When he found a way to make the dangerous chemical nitroglycerin safer to handle, safety and efficiency in the mining and construction industries improved dramatically. But his invention also paved the way for powerful weapons that were used in wars and conflicts. At the end of his life, Nobel donated almost all of his wealth to do something good for humanity - he created the Nobel Prizes, awarded every year to those who make a difference in science, culture, and peace.

Tibetan Buddhism, also known as Lamaism, is a Buddhist tradition that developed high in the Himalayas in Tibet and is a blend of Buddhism and local traditions. In this film, we will take a closer look at what it entails. The tradition emphasizes compassion and spiritual development through meditation, mantras, and special rituals. The film explains how monks and nuns play an important role as guides within the Tibetan tradition and that its leader is the Dalai Lama, who is considered to be a reincarnation of his predecessor. He has become a symbol of peace and also leads the work for an independent Tibet, as the country has been controlled by China since the 1950s.
