The ocean produces most of the oxygen in the air that we breathe. It's home to 80% of all life on earth. And it's in big trouble. 50% of the worlds coral reefs are gone. 90% of the fish have been taken from the ocean. 40% of the plankton that produce the oxygen we breathe have disappeared. Who will be the heroes the world needs to save its oceans? Are committed activists and scientists enough? Winner of the Best Film in the Ontario150 Film Challenge for Emerging Ontario Filmmakers, Sea of Life follows filmmaker Julia Barnes on an underwater adventure to discover the truth about the biggest threats facing the ocean and ultimately ourselves. Inspired by the late Rob Stewart's film Revolution, the young filmmaker finds herself on an epic journey around the world to save the water ecosystems we depend on for survival, as we come closer to causing "a mass extinction in the oceans." Sea of Life leads audiences through the beautiful world of coral reefs into the heart of the environmental movement, meeting passionate scientists, activists and explorers, who reveal an opportunity rise in the face of this challenge, to become the heroes the world needs.

It’s the summer of 2003 and thirteen-year-old astronomer Noah Cooper has just moved to Queensport, a small town with a vast amateur sky full of stars. There he meets Tara Dhillon, a lonely girl and aspiring filmmaker. When the two team up to produce an astronomy movie and enter a film contest, they discover a secret plan to turn their rural hamlet into a huge subdivision. Noah and Tara must use their unique skills to identify the culprits who plan on paving over the historic county ― and try to save the infinite beauty of the stars. As if that’s not enough to have at stake, Noah needs to win the prize money to buy a new telescope for his unemployed father ― an ex-astronomer who’s almost given up on the stars, as well as life on earth.

Translation of: Plantar árboles, sembrar ideas. Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. In 1977 in Kenya, she started the Green Belt Movement. Wangari's goals had been to use tree planting to restore the environment while providing income and resources to African women. The group's objectives broadened to the protection of human and environmental rights, civic education, and the promotion of democratic values while valuing the cultural heritage of Africa. The GBM has now planted tens of millions of trees. In her acceptance speech, Wangari explains that "the state of any country's environment is a reflection of the kind of governance in place, and without good governance there can be no peace." The efforts of the GBM and other organizations led to the peaceful transition to a democratic society in Kenya, and the tree became a symbol of the democratic struggle.

Desmond Cole’s activism and journalism find vibrant expression in his first book. Puncturing the bubble of Canadian smugness and naive assumptions of a post-racial nation, Cole chronicles just one year—2017—in the struggle against racism in this country. It was a year that saw calls for tighter borders when Black refugees braved frigid temperatures to cross into Manitoba from the States, Indigenous land and water protectors resisting the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, police across the country rallying around an officer accused of murder, and more. The year also witnessed the profound personal and professional ramifications of Cole’s unwavering determination to combat injustice. Month-by-month, Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality. Urgent, controversial, and unsparingly honest, this book is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada, as well as a potent antidote to the all-too-present complacency of many white Canadians.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Episode 5: 1775 to 1815 CE. At the beginning of the American Revolution in 1775, American rebels invade Canada, but despite the efforts of rebel spies to entice Quebec to join the revolution, les Canadiens refuse to take up arms against British rule, and the invasion ultimately fails. The mass migration of Loyalists that follows - more than 40,000 people in all — creates an English-speaking Canada virtually overnight. Over the next 30 years, the colony continues to develop. When the next American invaders arrive in 1812, they are fought to a stand-still at the battles of Queenston Heights, Chateauguay and Lundy's Lane, setting boundaries that remain today. The cast of characters includes the audacious military commanders General Isaac Brock and Colonel Charles-Michel de Salaberry; Hannah Ingraham and her dispossessed Loyalist family; Benedict Arnold, the notorious traitor to the American Revolution; visionary Indian leader Tecumseh; Pierre Bédard, brilliant tactician of an emerging colonial democracy; and Canadian traitors who are publicly executed near Hamilton, Ontario.

Resource guide available under Additional info tag. Winston LaRose, a beloved 80-year-old activist/amateur documentarian who has documented the Black community throughout the Black Diaspora for the past 60 years throws his hat into local politics and is met with unflinching systemic racism in the Canadian political system. This award-winning film gives an insider perspective of Black community activism in Canada.

This documentary follows Winston’s fight for the community of Jane and Finch that ultimately highlights the lack of representation for black people and POC within the Canadian political system. As LaRose campaigns for a position as councillor, new challenges add to old ones that make it harder for him to succeed within a system that is inherently racist. Doug Ford’s decision to slash the number of seats within City Council, to the blatant racist remarks from fellow candidate Mammoliti to gain votes, exemplifies how the Canadian political system does not offer equal or fair opportunities for the politically marginalized.

This documentary shows the issue of systemic racism within the Canadian political system, the lack of representation for the marginalized and the negative generational effect colonialism has had on individuals, communities, and societies. However, this film also displays the undeniable strength of community, grassroots organizations, and the power and impact one person can have to change the world around them.
