  From the Curio channel: News in Review. Billed as the last, best hope to tackle the world's climate crisis, the UN climate change conference, COP26, got underway in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2021. Attended by 200 countries, it was seen as the most significant climate event since the 2015 Paris Agreement was reached. It was there that members agreed to cap global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. But there's a greater urgency this year with the world on the brink of climate disaster by the end of the century.

  From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. One challenge for medical devices that are implanted within the body - such as pacemakers, drug pumps or neural stimulators - is power. Generally, they're powered by batteries, but when the power runs out, the batteries have to be replaced, requiring further invasive surgery. Professor John Rogers, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has developed a device that can generate electricity from the movement of organs within the body. His device uses a piezo-electric material that produces electricity when bent. When attached to a beating heart, it produces enough electricity to run a pacemaker or other device, while apparently having no impact on the heart's function.

     This is a film about children who thought they were “crazy.” Who wanted to die. Who felt fear, anger and hopelessness. Four young people living with mental illness and their loved ones make the courageous decision to open up about their stories. Their voices are complemented by that of the director, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as an adult and powerfully evokes the initial symptoms, which emerged in her childhood. Racing Thoughts skirts the specialists’ debates in favour of a more personal tone, moving away from the alarming vocabulary of diagnoses and allowing viewers to discover the children affected.

The bison are gone, settlers from the East are arriving daily, and the Métis and First Nations of the Northwest face hunger and uncertainty as their traditional way of life is threatened. The Canadian government has ignored their petitions, but hope rises when Louis Riel returns to help. However, battles between Canadian forces and the Métis and their allies lead to a defeat at Batoche. Through it all, Echo gains new perspectives about where she came from and what the future may hold"--Back cover.

     Reach Your Potential is a course designed for everyone at any level. People can expect multiple jobs in their lifetime, and a career path that is anything but a straight line to the top. What is important is to find ways to reach your potential. In this course psychologist Peter Quarry invites you to consider how you can reach your potential. You will learn to consider capacity-building questions: Am I in the right career? Have I identified my purpose and my path? Am I achieving results in my current role? Am I my own best friend or worst enemy? What is holding me back? Am I taking practical steps to reach my potential? Reaching your potential is finding your purpose and your path to achieving it.  Reach your potential by first finding your true purpose in life;  Ask yourself whether you are achieving maximum results;  Address what holds you back;  Take practical steps to take you forward;

  From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. It is well known how quickly and efficiently snakes can slither across the ground. But a group of snakes called Chrysopelea use similar movements to help them sustain flight. These one-metre-long snakes use their signature "S" shape to swim through the air, as they glide down from the tree-tops in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. But that's not all. Dr. Jake Socha, an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering, Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech University, has found that these snakes change their body shape while in the air, in order to increase aerodynamics. By moving their ribs forward and closer to their spine, the snake's body flattens to allow it to slice through the air. This same reconfiguration creates a concave trough along its underbelly to help maintain loft.
