Drawing from her experiences as an Indigenous scientist, botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer demonstrated how all living things—from strawberries and witch hazel to water lilies and lichen—provide us with gifts and lessons every day in her best-selling book Braiding Sweetgrass. Adapted for young adults by Monique Gray Smith, this new edition reinforces how wider ecological understanding stems from listening to the earth’s oldest teachers: the plants around us. With informative sidebars, reflection questions, and art from illustrator Nicole Neidhardt, Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults brings Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and the lessons of plant life to a new generation.

Teacher's guide and transcript available under Additional info tag. You may not think soil is that important but without SOIL, there would be no life on Earth. Soil is an essential source of life and nutrients for various organisms, including you and me. Soil provides a base for forests, farms and gardens. In Getting the Dirt on Soil, students learn about the different types of soil, the unique composition, characteristics and condition of each soil type, and how it is vital for sustaining plant and animal life. Students also learn about erosion, weathering, composting, and the ways soil is used by various aboriginal groups around the world. Incorporating easy-to-understand graphics and animated sequences along with bright, colourful video footage and on-screen vocabulary, students will come away with an excellent understanding of the importance of taking care of the soil found all around us.

Erin Goodpipe and Saxon de Cocq delve into Treaty 6 which covers much of central Alberta and Saskatchewan. At the time of the negotiation and signing of this treaty, the buffalo herds were nearing extinction, which had huge negative impact on the health and safety of the Plains Indigenous Peoples as they struggled to survive. Consequently, a medicine chest clause was added to this treaty to protect health. However, at the same time the Indian Act was passed, undermining any rights enshrined in treaties. The loyalties and motivations of James McKay also become clearer in this episode. "Treaty Road" is an in-depth 6-part documentary series that follows Métis writer, director and producer Saxon de Cocq and Dakota/Anishinaabekwe educator and researcher, Erin Goodpipe as they travel the old roads to uncover the truth about the signing of the controversial documents, the Numbered Treaties. They examine the role that Saxon's ancestor, James Mackay played in the numbered treaty negotiations.

In Treaty 3 territory which covers parts of Ontario and Manitoba, Erin Goodpipe and Saxon de Cocq go on a deep exploration into the importance of water for the Indigenous peoples here. They learn about how colonization has been responsible for the contamination of this important resource, and how this has impacted the health and safety of those in the region. At a road blockade in Grassy Narrows First Nation, ON, a woman poisoned by mercury explains environmental racism. The struggle to protect the water and land is ongoing.

Erin Goodpipe and Saxon de Cocq travel to Treaty 5 territory which includes parts of northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. There they explore the issue of food sovereignty and how Treaty 5 limited people's ability to feed their communities. Settler encroachment took away the ability of the Indigenous peoples to sustain themselves from the bounty of the land upon which they lived. They learn about how innovative gardeners in Norway House Cree Nation provide greens year-round and engage in land-based education where they go ice fishing.
From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. In late September, Instagram announced it would be pausing plans to launch a version of its app for kids. It happened just after The Wall Street Journal published a report saying Facebook - which owns Instagram - did an internal study showing the app could be harmful to young people, particularly girls. It's not the first time adults have tried to stop kids from using social media.
