Countries manufacture and produce goods like cars or strawberries and export them to other countries, or they import things from other countries that they do not have. Strawberries are bought or imported by Norway in winter from more southern countries, and maple syrup is sold or exported by Canada to countries that don't produce it like Japan and Germany. Exports help us make money and imports connect us to the world and give us more choices as consumers.

Teacher's guide available under Additional info tag. 4 segments include:
INVESTIGATION/HANDS-ON:
Han Ru and Stefano find strong trusses all around the waterfront, mostly on bridges and structures that hold things together. They also test the strength of a spaghetti truss with Francis, a mechanical engineer. The investigators are amazed to find that a spaghetti truss structure can hold up to twenty times its own weight.

CHALLENGE:
Two teams compete to create their own truss bridges out of broomsticks and connectors. Think it will hold their weight? We’ll find out when the teams have to cross “shark infested” waters.

BRAIN BENDER:
Since trusses are made of interlocking triangles, Hamza has a triangle puzzle for Leanna and Sabrina: counting all the triangles that make up a large triangle graphic. This Brain Bender is tricky because some of the small triangles combine to make larger triangles.

EDUCATIONAL TAKE AWAY:
Trusses are a simple way to make something strong and load-bearing that can cover a long distance, but is also light. Many bridges and structures û including roller coasters and Ferris wheels -- are made with trusses. A truss structure is made of congruent triangles that are either translated or rotated across the structure. Hamza wonders why so many structures, like bridges, are made of interlocking triangles. To find out why, Hamza interviews a bridge troll, challengers create their own bridges to cross "shark infested" waters, and the Investigators test the strength of a spaghetti bridge.

Aviaq Johnston is a young Inuk author from Igloolik, Nunavut. Nalvana feels like all of her friends have some type of superpower. She has friends with super speed (who always beat her in races), friends with super strength (who can dangle from the monkey bars for hours), and friends who are better than she is at a million other things. Nalvana thinks she must be the only kid in town without a superpower. But then her mom shows Nalvana that she is unique and special--and that her superpower was right in front of her all along.

Information about clean water follows main text.
Published simultaneously in softcover by Scholastic Canada Ltd. Nibi is an Indigenous girl on the search for clean water to drink. Though she is faced with repeated obstacles, Nibi's joyful and determined energy become a catalyst for change and action as her community, and in widening circles, the country and government rally around her to make clean drinking water available for all. There is a strong underlying message that even when a problem seems too large to face, every bit that everyone does helps. And inaction is not an option.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. As the planet keeps on warming, new technology aims to mitigate climate change to some extent. However, some warming has already happened. With more to come, people will need to adapt. Consider the stakes in Africa. Countries there already import billions worth of food. If the deserts keep encroaching, if the droughts get worse, feeding people will get harder and more expensive. So The National asks: How do you feed a world dealing with climate change?

Our cellphones, our clothes, our food: All are everyday things we consider essential, but we seldom think of what and who is involved in making them and getting them into our hands. In Follow Your Stuff, award-winning children's author Kevin Sylvester and business professor Michael Hlinka team up again, this time to tackle the complex dynamics of the global economy, examining the often complex journey of ordinary goods, from production right to our doorsteps. Using familiar examples, easy-to-follow charts and graphs, and a big helping of humor, Hlinka and Sylvester introduce young readers to concepts such as relative value and fair wages and how to think critically about our purchasing decisions. Sylvester's lively illustrations add even more kid-appeal making this sequel to the critically acclaimed Follow Your Money the perfect introduction to socio-economics and an eye-opening essential read for young people.
