In 1914, Canada was a very British society with anti-Asian attitudes. Although Great Britain had declared that all people from India were officially British citizens and could live anywhere in the British Commonwealth, Canada refused to accept them. This racist policy was challenged by Gurdit Singh, a Sikh businessman, who chartered a ship, the Komagata Maru, and sailed to Vancouver with over 300 Indians wishing to immigrate to Canada. They were turned back, tragically. Over the years, the Canadian government gradually changed its immigration policies, first allowing entry to wives and children of Indian immigrants and later to many more immigrants from India. The Indo-Canadian community has grown throughout Canada, especially in British Columbia.

My name is Calvin Sinclair, I'm eleven years old and I have a confession ... I killed my brother. It's the summer before grade 6 and Calvin Sinclair is bored to tears. He's recently moved from a big city to a small town and there's nothing to do. It's hot, he has no friends and the only kid around is his six-year-old brother Sammy who can barely throw a basketball as high as the hoop. So Cal occupies his time by getting his brother to do almost anything: from chasing wasps to tromping through rose bushes. And Sammy is all too eager -- as long as it means getting a "Level" and moving one step closer to his brother's Eagle status. But when Cal meets Aleta Alvarado, a new girl who shares his love for Goosebumps books and adventure, Sammy is pushed aside. Cal feels guilty but not guilty enough to change. At least not until things at home start falling apart and he's left wondering whether Sammy will ever complete his own journey...

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. You don't have to be in advanced math for algorithms to have an impact on your life. In simple terms, an algorithm is the set of instructions that determines how your computer software behaves. On social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, the algorithm determines which posts you see and in what order. It also decides which posts you don't see. So, while you may think you're getting an unfiltered view of the world when you scroll, in fact, your social media experience is being carefully curated.

Violent August documentary available as DVD603. 100 years ago Toronto experienced one its largest riots in history and one many have never heard of. As many as 50,000 people took to the streets over three days, destroying more than a dozen Greek-owned businesses. It started with a minor altercation at a Greek-owned restaurant in the Yonge and College area, but as Ontario Hub field producer Jeyan Jeganathan explains, resentment towards Greek immigrants was building well before that.

Everyone knows how much brainy Bri likes the spotlight (not). So why did she ever agree to something that forces her to learn a new language, give a speech, help organize a party, and juggle drama at school and home?! As the big event inches closer, Bri wonders if it's all worth it. . . .Told in alternating past and present chapters, Bri's heartwarming story unfolds over the eight months leading up to her bat mitzvah--as well as over the course of the big day itself.
