L'aventure continue!

Board book. Healthy gums and teeth improve overall wellness and quality of life, and help you feel confident in your smile. Baby Smiles promotes healthy habits for adults and little ones to learn together, to support a lifetime of dental well-being. This informative board book, written in Mi'kmaw and English, will teach caregivers how to support their child's oral health through their first year of life and beyond. Develop healthy habits and learn what food and drink are best for growing teeth and gums, when to take baby to their first dental visit, and the appropriate amount of toothpaste for children. Baby Smiles started as a project by the five First Nations communities in Unama'ki (Cape Breton Island, NS) through the Tui'kn Partnership. Tui'kn means "passage" in the Mi'kmaq language. For over twenty years, Eskasoni, Membertou, Potlotek, Wagmatcook, and Waycobah First Nations have worked together to bring a new way of thinking about health and the delivery of health services to their communities. The book was written with support from collaborators in the Faculties of Dentistry and Health at Dalhousie University, and the project has since grown to include all thirteen communities across Nova Scotia, through Tajikeimik.

"Benjamin loves the rain. He loves splashing in puddles and kicking the droplets. And most of all, he loves the sound of thunder because it reminds him of the drum his grandfather plays at powwow. There's nothing better than being outside in the rain, enjoying all the colors and sounds of the storm -- until the lightning comes. Benjamin doesn't like the lightning at all! But when he closes his eyes and listens to the sound of the thunder, he imagines himself as a powwow dancer, dancing in time to the beat of the drum, not scared of anything. Featuring Cree words interwoven into the story, and a pronunciation guide in backmatter, this inviting picture book is a warm celebration of drumming, dancing and the joy of jumping in puddles"--Provided by publisher.

After they've arrived, the children decide to fish for dinner while Moshom naps. They are in their canoe in the middle of the lake when the water around them begins to swirl and crash. They are thrown overboard and when Lauren surfaces she sees her brother being pulled away by the Memekwesewak - creatures who live in and around water and like to interfere with humans. Lauren must follow the Memekwesewak through a portal and along a watery path to find and bring back James. But when she finally comes upon her brother, she too feels the lure of the Memekwesewak's song. Something even stronger must pull them back home.

Challa looked into the mirror and saw a brown girl with long hair, a big toothy smile, big brown eyes and the cutest little dimples that looked like raisins on bannock. When Challa comes home in tears after being teased about her smile, her mom greets her with a giant squish hug and gives her a special gift. It’s a magic mirror, shiny, beaded and beautiful, passed on from her mom, and from her djo djo before her. Challa’s mom tells her that when anyone looks into the mirror, they will see their true self. There’s just one rule: Everyone has to say what they see in the reflection. At first the mirror seems to work for everyone but her. Neebin looks into the mirror and sees a boy with long, shiny braided hair and perfectly small sparkling eyes that look like stars in the sky. Keggy looks into the mirror and sees a brown girl with sharp cheekbones, a perfectly pretty nose, and stunning black hair that looks like waves in the ocean. Kiniw sees a boy with long curly eyelashes, a perfect-sized body that gives the best hugs, and rosy cheeks that look like ripe strawberries. Challa keeps looking and looking. The more beauty she sees in herself, the happier she feels. And the longer she looks into the mirror, the more beauty she sees, until finally Challa sees so much beauty, she can't contain her smile! And that’s the smile that lights up the room and the whole world beyond. And Challa sees that the magic lies in love!

[SDM]

Have you ever wondered why Rabbit has such long ears? Or why Raccoon is wearing a mask? In this collection of funny and unique short stories, young Skye enlightens us by telling a number of Indigenous teachings, passed down to her from her Ojibway Grandfather. Through her natural gift of storytelling, Skye encourages other children to embrace the art and become storytellers, too! Lindsay King is an Ojibway storyteller, and is a member of and resides on Pikangikum First Nation in Northern Ontario.
