From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. What does reconciliation look like? CBC's Duncan McCue reports on the personal response to the idea of reconciliation in one B.C. community. For the many trying to figure out what reconciliation looks like and how we can move forward, perhaps look no further than the unique relationship between John and Nancy Denham, a non-Aboriginal couple, and their drum teacher Terry Aleck, a residential school survivor.

"An examination of the Sixties Scoop – a child welfare policy in Canada that saw the removal of Indigenous children from their families, often by force. Starting in 1951, Indigenous children in Canada were taken by social welfare agencies from their families and placed in the care of non-Indigenous families. These children grew up without their birth families, cultural roots, and language. Many tried to run away and some died in the attempt. The taking of the children is known as the Sixties Scoop, though the policies and practices started before the 1960s and lasted long after. Today, Indigenous children are shockingly over-represented in the child welfare system across Canada."

From the Curio channel: News in Review. Wes Williams, better known to many as Maestro Fresh Wes, is often called the Godfather of Canadian hip hop. He sprang on to the music scene in 1989 with the release of his song "Let Your Backbone Slide" from debut album Symphony in Effect. It was the first rap single certified Gold in Canada. In 2019, this groundbreaking anthem became the first hip hop song to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Williams, who studied law and political science at Carleton University, not only became a recording artist and producer but an actor, author and motivational speaker. Here, he takes the time to go back to a shopping mall in Scarborough to show us where it all began.

A trip to a remote lake in northern Ontario with his grandfather doesn't thrill Steve, especially since his twin brother, DJ, was taken to Central America. Matters start to look up when his grandfather tells Steve about the mysterious death of the artist Tom Thomson and sets him the task of finding Thomson's missing skull. Steve loves mysteries, but when odd things begin happening and strange people start threatening him, Steve wonders whether this is part of his grandfather's plan. Is this still a simple puzzle, or is something far more sinister going on?

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Have you heard the word reconciliation before? It comes up a lot around Orange Shirt Day, which is marked every year on September 30 as a day to raise awareness about the horror faced by Indigenous people who were forced to attend Canadian residential schools. In 2021, Canada announced that September 30 would officially be called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and federal workers would be given the day off in order to acknowledge that history. But what does reconciliation even mean?

From the Curio channel: News in Review. A series of storms swept across southern British Columbia in November 2021, bringing heavy rain, extreme flooding and deadly mudslides. Some areas received a month's worth of rain in under two days. Major highways and the province's supply routes were blocked. Nearly 20,000 people were forced to abandon their homes. The deluge swamped vital farmland, where hundreds of thousands of animals perished. It was one of the most severe natural disasters to strike British Columbia in a generation.
