"Washington Black is an eleven-year-old field slave who knows no other life than the Barbados sugar plantation where he was born. When his master's eccentric brother chooses him to be his manservant, Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or "Titch," is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and abolitionist. He initiates Wash into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky; where two people, separated by an impossible divide, might begin to see each other as human; and where a boy born in chains can embrace a life of dignity and meaning. But when a man is killed and a bounty is placed on Wash's head, Titch abandons everything to save him. What follows is their flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic, where Wash, left on his own, must invent another new life"--OCLC.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. One challenge for medical devices that are implanted within the body - such as pacemakers, drug pumps or neural stimulators - is power. Generally, they're powered by batteries, but when the power runs out, the batteries have to be replaced, requiring further invasive surgery. Professor John Rogers, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has developed a device that can generate electricity from the movement of organs within the body. His device uses a piezo-electric material that produces electricity when bent. When attached to a beating heart, it produces enough electricity to run a pacemaker or other device, while apparently having no impact on the heart's function.

Luna has always wanted to change the world -- to fix it, to free it -- even if she's never actually known how. Now that all of dragon - and humankind are in mortal danger, Luna is flying back home to Pantala with a team of dragons on a rescue mission, determined to be brave and useful. But saving a continent isn't as easy as a prophecy makes it sound, and "facing a great evil" definitely requires more than the fiery silk that Luna is uniquely able to create. As she fights her way to the abyss that hides the dark roots poisoning Pantala, Luna must uncover a long-buried secret and unite her friends, her enemies, and her own powers. If she doesn't, she won't get to change the world. She'll have to say goodbye to it -- forever."

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Episode 5: 1775 to 1815 CE. At the beginning of the American Revolution in 1775, American rebels invade Canada, but despite the efforts of rebel spies to entice Quebec to join the revolution, les Canadiens refuse to take up arms against British rule, and the invasion ultimately fails. The mass migration of Loyalists that follows - more than 40,000 people in all — creates an English-speaking Canada virtually overnight. Over the next 30 years, the colony continues to develop. When the next American invaders arrive in 1812, they are fought to a stand-still at the battles of Queenston Heights, Chateauguay and Lundy's Lane, setting boundaries that remain today. The cast of characters includes the audacious military commanders General Isaac Brock and Colonel Charles-Michel de Salaberry; Hannah Ingraham and her dispossessed Loyalist family; Benedict Arnold, the notorious traitor to the American Revolution; visionary Indian leader Tecumseh; Pierre Bédard, brilliant tactician of an emerging colonial democracy; and Canadian traitors who are publicly executed near Hamilton, Ontario.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. It is well known how quickly and efficiently snakes can slither across the ground. But a group of snakes called Chrysopelea use similar movements to help them sustain flight. These one-metre-long snakes use their signature "S" shape to swim through the air, as they glide down from the tree-tops in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. But that's not all. Dr. Jake Socha, an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering, Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech University, has found that these snakes change their body shape while in the air, in order to increase aerodynamics. By moving their ribs forward and closer to their spine, the snake's body flattens to allow it to slice through the air. This same reconfiguration creates a concave trough along its underbelly to help maintain loft.
