Electronic reproduction. You know the Super Soaker. It's one of top twenty toys of all time. And it was invented entirely by accident. Trying to create a new cooling system for refrigerators and air conditioners, inventor Lonnie Johnson instead created the mechanics for the iconic toy. A love for rockets, robots, inventions, and a mind for creativity began early in Lonnie Johnson's life. Growing up in a house full of brothers and sisters, persistence and a passion for problem solving became the cornerstone for a career as an engineer and his work with NASA. But it is his invention of the Super Soaker water gun that has made his most memorable splash with kids and adults.

A National history--cover. Honours the survivors, the former students, who attended residential schools. Offers a first-person perspective of the residential school system in Canada, as it shares the memories of more than 70 survivors from across Canada as well as 125 archival and contemporary images (65 black & white photographs, 51 colour, some never before published). Expresses the truths about residential school experiences and honours the survivors. Along with the survivors voices, are the evocative, archival photographs provided by the Shingwauk Residential Schools Research Centre with the assistance of curator Krista McCracken. Begins with the moving introduction by Larry Loyie, and moves to seven chapters that explore the purpose of this school system; cultures and traditions; leaving home; life at school the half-day system; the dark side of the schools; friendship and laughter coping with a new life; changing world--the healing begins; and an afterword. A detailed, full colour map showing residential schools, timeline with key dates, glossary, and a helpful index (including names of survivors and schools).

From the Curio channel: News in Review. City roads are designed for vehicles. But the modern cultural push for pedestrian-friendly cities and increased bike paths means there's a war raging on the streets. Unfortunately, pedestrian and bicycle fatalities are on the rise. In an effort to combat this, many cities have adopted a road safety program called Vision Zero. Launched in Sweden, this program helps marry pedestrians, bikes and automobiles. The program puts emphasis on safety design and system controls. Steven D'Souza takes us to New York where they've been integrating the program with much success for the past four years. And we look at the problems plaguing Canada's most populous city as it tries to ensure the safety of all road users.

Sequel to: The final gambit. Grayson Hawthorne was raised as the heir apparent to his billionaire grandfather, taught from the cradle to put family first. Now the great Tobias Hawthorne is dead and his family disinherited, but some lessons linger. When Grayson's half-sisters find themselves in trouble, he swoops in to do what he does best: take care of the problem--efficiently, effectively, mercilessly. And without getting bogged down in emotional entanglements. Jameson Hawthorne is a risk-taker, a sensation-seeker, a player of games. When his mysterious father appears and asks for a favor, Jameson can't resist the challenge. Now he must infiltrate London's most exclusive underground gambling club, which caters to the rich, the powerful, and the aristocratic, and win an impossible game of greatest stakes. Luckily, Jameson Hawthorne lives for impossible. Drawn into twisted games on opposite sides of the globe, Grayson and Jameson--with the help of their brothers and the girl who inherited their grandfather's fortune--must dig deep to decide who they want to be and what each of them will sacrifice to win.

In this explosive episode, we find out how geology, chemistry, physics and even creativity go into understanding volcanoes. We learn volcanoes are different ages and sizes and also have labels such as active, dormant and extinct, and cone, shield and composite.

Kai and Anostin travel to Iceland - the land of fire and ice! They meet Volcanologist Dr. Rikke Pedersen who explains the volcanology of Iceland and the differences between the types of eruptions. The Hawaiian islands were also created from volcanoes.
We talk with Indigenous Hawaiian geophysicist Dr. Jim Kauahikaua who studies volcanic activity in Hawaii, drawing from science, story and history.
Commander John Herrington explains how volcanoes are one of the most powerful forces of nature.
Kai shows us his rockin’ volcanorock collection, while the Cosmic Surfer visits some famous volcanoes.

Titre original: Fatty legs.
