Traditional Northwestern Indigenous spiritual images combine with cutting-edge computer animation in this surreal story about the power of tradition. Three urban Indigenous teens are whisked away to an imaginary land by a magical raven. Here, the young people meet a totem pole whose characters (a raven, a frog and a bear) come to life, becoming their teachers, guides and friends--demonstrating their significance to Northwest First Nation cultures and allowing the teens to understand the strength of their own traditions. Featuring a special interview segment with J. Bradley Hunt, the celebrated Heiltsuk artist on whose work the computer-animated characters in Totem Talk are based.

A war is brewing in Lyra's world--a battle between those who would keep people in ignorance and those who are willing to fight for true freedom. Lyra is thrust into the middle of the conflict when her uncle Asriel comes to Oxford, fomenting rebellion, and when her best friend, Roger, suddenly disappears. Lyra learns that Roger was kidnapped by a shadowy organization that steals children and, it is rumored, experiments on them. To find him, she will travel to the cold, far North, where armored bears and witch clans rule . . . and where her uncle Asriel is attempting to build a bridge to a parallel world. What Lyra doesn't know, mustn't know, is that her actions will have consequences not just in her world, but in all the worlds beyond.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Aandeg Muldrew, 19, is the University of Manitoba's youngest sessional instructor, teaching introductory Ojibwe. Muldrew, who lives in Winnipeg, started learning the language from his grandmother when he was 10. Given the history of languages lost after colonization and residential schools, speaking the language is "almost like an act of defiance," he says. Speaking Ojibwe is a way of "reconciling our past ... with the present and bringing ... what was lost through all these" residential schools and colonization.
This book explores the death of a loved one through the parallel experiences of other species of animals, similar to Elin's treatment of nature in You Are Stardust and problem-solving in Wild Ideas. As with Elin's previous picture books, A Last Goodbye will combine simple, poetic text with a "big idea" in this case, the idea that death is a natural part of our lives and that many species experience sadness and mourning when their loved ones are sick and dying. From elephants to killer whales, parrots to bonobos, lemurs to humans, many animals have rituals to commemorate their loved ones and to help them through difficult times. This book broaches a difficult and scary topic through a gentle and heartfelt exploration of the natural stages of life and loss. In a parallel way to how we will be remembered by our loved ones, the book goes on to explore the ways our bodies might be remembered by the earth, repurposed to continue replenishing new life.

Morgan and Eli, two Indigenous children forced away from their families and communities, are brought together in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They each feel disconnected, from their culture and each other, and struggle to fit in at school and at their new home -- until they find a secret place, walled off in an unfinished attic bedroom. A portal opens to another reality, Askí, bringing them onto frozen, barren grounds, where they meet Ochek (Fisher). The only hunter supporting his starving community, Misewa, Ochek welcomes the human children, teaching them traditional ways to survive. But as the need for food becomes desperate, they embark on a dangerous mission. Accompanied by Arik, a sassy Squirrel they catch stealing from the trapline, they try to save Misewa before the icy grip of winter freezes everything -- including them.
