Preface -- Introduction -- We want you to see race -- We can enjoy Ed Sheeran, BTS, and Cardi B -- Certain things are racist, even if you don't know it -- You could at least try to pronounce my name correctly -- This isn't a fad: this is my culture -- So your friend is racist. What should you do? -- No. You can't. No. You shouldn't. And don't ask that -- No, I didn't get here by Affirmative Action (and if I did, so what?) -- Let's not do oppression olympics -- We don't care what your black, brown, or Asian friend said was okay (F.U.B.U.) -- In the end: we don't need allies: we need accomplices -- An encyclopedia of racism -- People and things to know -- The black friend playlist. Writing from the perspective of a friend, Frederick Joseph offers candid reflections on his own experiences with racism and conversations with prominent artists and activists about theirs--creating an essential read for white people who are committed anti-racists and those newly come to the cause of racial justice. Anishinaabe author Tanya Talaga retells this history through an Indigenous lens, beginning with the life of her great-great grandmother, and her family as they experienced decades of government- and Church-sanctioned oppression, disenfranchisement and genocide.

From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Broadway actor and children's television host Josh Dela Cruz will champion Foe by Iain Reid on Canada Reads 2026. The dystopian thriller takes place in an old, isolated farmhouse in the not-so-distant future. The house is inhabited by Junior and his wife, Henrietta, whose peaceful lives are interrupted by the arrival of a man in a business suit. Junior has been randomly selected for a scientific program and will be leaving home for the indefinite future, while his wife stays home with a companion. The shock of this announcement, coupled with his increasingly distant wife and the intruder's vague explanations, send Junior in a tailspin as he races to figure out what's really going on. Reid is the Kingston, Ont.-based author of five books, including his New York Times bestselling debut novel I'm Thinking of Ending Things, which has been translated into more than 20 languages and was adapted into a Netflix film by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. In an email to CBC Books, Reid said his inspiration for Foe "came from thinking about our relationship to AI, technology, space and each other." When Reid started writing the book in 2015, he said he "was reading a lot about the future of AI and how technology was going to re-shape our lives over the coming years." "I was especially concerned with how it would infiltrate our intimate relationships, and how it would alter the way we communicate with each other." In the time since the book came out, AI has become ubiquitous and some have observed that current events have come to resemble dystopian fiction more and more. Asked about this, Reid said he finds himself "shocked and horrified on a near daily basis these days for many reasons related to politics, ongoing events, including our overreliance on technology, constant overconsumption and environmental disregard." It's a scenario that feels both scary and unsettling, said Reid. "I tried to write about that in a domestic context, zooming in on one particular relationship."

From author of the Misewa Saga series David A. Robertson, this is the essential guide for all Canadians to understand how small and attainable acts towards reconciliation can make an enormous difference in our collective efforts to build a reconciled country. 52 Ways to Reconcile is an accessible, friendly guide for non-Indigenous people eager to learn, or Indigenous people eager to do more in our collective effort towards reconciliation, as people, and as a country. As much as non-Indigenous people want to walk the path of reconciliation, they often aren't quite sure what to do, and they're afraid of making mistakes. This book is the answer and the long overdue guide. The idea of this book is simple: 52 small acts of reconciliation to consider, one per week, for an entire year. They're all doable, and they're all meaningful. All 52 steps take readers in the right direction, towards a healthier relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and a time when we are past trauma. By following these steps, we can live in stronger and healthier communities equally, and respectfully, together.

An introduction / by Jason Reynolds -- Bottle of Nesquik, bottle of Long Since Forgotten -- Two Americas -- So what is this talk I never got? -- How I tell a story -- White boy -- Chicken and egg problem... solved! -- Cheating to win -- History lives in the present -- The entire system is rigged -- Ninja runs -- Hard look in the mirror -- Interruption -- What bullying looks like... to a whole community -- So step up! -- Well, actually, hang on a second... step back -- Messing up -- Messing up... and listening -- Who? -- Listening... without getting defensive -- Listening... and believing -- Taking action. All too many kids of color get 'the talk.' The talk about where to keep their hands, how to wear their clothes, how to speak, how to act around police-an honest talk, a talk about survival in a racist world. The get "the talk" because they must. But white kids don't get this talk. Instead, they're barely spoken to about race at all-and that needs to change. The Other Talk begins this much-needed conversation for white kids. In an accessible, anecdotal, and honest account from his own life, Brendan Kiely introduces young readers to white privilege, unconscious bias, and allyship-because racism isn't just an issue for people of color, it's an issue white people have to deal with, too, and it's time we all start doing our part.

"Based on a viral article, 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act is the essential guide to understanding the legal document and its repercussion on generations of Indigenous peoples, written by a leading cultural sensitivity trainer. The Indian Act, after 141 years, continues to shape, control, and constrain the lives and opportunities of Indigenous peoples, and is at the root of many lasting stereotypes. Bob Joseph's book comes at a key time in the reconciliation process, when awareness from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities is at a crescendo. Joseph explains how Indigenous peoples can step out from under the Indian Act and return to self-government, self-determination, and self-reliance-and why doing so would result in a better country for every Canadian. He dissects the complex issues around truth and reconciliation, and clearly demonstrates why learning about the Indian Act's cruel, enduring legacy is essential for the country to move toward true reconciliation."--

The Spanish Flu, SARS, Nipha, and the deadly Ebola all originated in birds or animals. When animals are commercially farmed, a virus can spread rapidly, increasing the likelihood it will spread to humans. About 75% of new infectious diseases are zoonotic, causing millions of deaths every year. By late 2021 COVID-19 has infected more than 200,000 million people and killed more than 4.5 million people worldwide. COVID-19 has now mutated hundreds of times, but the Delta variant has spread more quickly than any previous variant. American virologist Angela Rasmussen is joining a new ground-breaking lab in Saskatchewan with containment that will allow safe study of new pathogens and help build new vaccine technologies for animals and humans. Epidemiologist Rob Wallace has been warning for years about the dangers of raising animals in highly concentrated industrial farm conditions. Scientists are investigating possible links to COVID-19 from large Wuhan commercial pig farms; similar links are found in Brazil, Germany, and the northeastern US. Factory farming relies on antibiotics, fuelling antibiotic resistance. Animal welfare activists are hoping to motivate change in farming practices. We need to think about how we deal with our environment and the environment we create for the animals we consume. Described Video

Adapted from the stop-motion animated film of the same name, written and directed by Amanda Strong. On a journey to uncover her family's story, Spotted Fawn travels through time and space to reclaim connection to ancestors, language, and the land, creating a path forward in this essential graphic novel. In the dreamworld she bears witness to a mountain of buffalo skulls. They stand as a ghostly monument to the slaughter of the Plains bison to near extinction-- a key tactic to starve and contain the Indigenous People onto reservations. On this path, Spotted Fawn knows she must travel through her own family history to confront the harsh realities of the past and reignite her connection to her people and the land. Her darkroom becomes a portal, and her photographs allow her glimpses into the lives of her relatives over the course of four chapters of this book, which follow the phases of the moon. Time and space become unlocked and unfurl in front of her eyes. Guided by her ancestors, Spotted Fawn's travels through the past allow her to come into full face, like the moon itself.

In this animated math video, Aaron helps his grandfather build a garden in the backyard. They need to calculate the area, which Aaron learns is the amount of space covered by a 2D shape or surface. Area can be calculated by using 1 cm squared paper and counting the squares. Aaron also learns the formulas for calculating the area of a rectangle, a parallelogram, a triangle, and a polygon. Area is expressed in square centimetres, square metres, or square kilometres.

Cubes are part of the rectangular prism family; these shapes all have 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges. They also have opposite congruent faces which are parallel, and adjacent faces are at a ninety-degree angle. A cube can form 11 different nets. Your challenge: create the nine cube nets not shown in the video.

Zoey has just read Alice in Wonderland. She and Lukas decide to create an Alice-in-Wonderland-like world filled with opposites, palindromes and tricky double negatives. With the help of their special guest, a psychologist and teacher who wrote a book in mirror writing, they try their hand at writing backwards just like the author of Alice in Wonderland sometimes did. Teams of kids match up pairs of palindromes in the game show. When Lukas programs Booboo Bot to say everything backwards, it sends Booboo Bot into a fit of hysterics. In the challenge, teams of kids have to follow commands filled with double negatives and opposites. It's not easy figuring out what to do, not do or not not do!
