Un jour, les enfants apprennent qu'un de leur grand-père souffrant de démence viendra vivre avec eux. C'est le grand-père grognon qu'ils n'ont jamais connu puisque ce dernier a coupé les liens avec son fils depuis fort longtemps. Alors tout change pour Sumac. Elle doit donner sa chambre à ce grand-père grognon pour qu'il se sente le bienvenu. Elle essaie d'être gentille, mais l'irritable grand-père grincheux n'est pas facile et il n'approuve pas leur mode de vie : des grains entiers, des légumes étranges, des animaux secourus, un foyer multiculturel... Il est si difficile de s'entendre avec lui que Sumac n'y voit qu'une solution, le grand-père grincheux doit partir. Mais saura-t-elle lui trouver le foyer dont il a besoin?
