"Most of us define ourselves as lefties or righties based on the hand we use for writing. But what makes people prefer one hand over the other? And what if handedness doesn't tell the whole story? Do we also favor one eye, ear, or foot? What about people who use different hands for different activities? That's where this book comes in. It examines all things lefty--from handedness in our ancient ancestors to lefty myths to current theories about the roles of genetics, environment, and brain structure. It also tackles questions such as: Why and when does someone become a lefty? Are humans the only left-handed animals? And what is it like to live a left-handed life in a right-handed world? By gently disrupting traditional lefty/righty thinking, Left-handed celebrates the differences that make each of us unique."--

Alice Dunnigan knew all about injustice -- she was the daughter of poor Black sharecroppers in Kentucky. But Alice also knew the key to fighting injustice was to speak out. At 13 years old, she wrote to a Black newspaper asking for a job -- and got it! After many years of hard work as a teacher, a cleaner, a typist, and a journalist, Alice became the first Black woman in the Capitol Press Corp. But one person was still beyond her grasp, a person who needed to be held accountable: President Truman. Would he keep his promise to support civil rights for Black Americans? By scrimping and saving for a ticket on the president's cross-country train tour, Alice was able to meet the president and win him over to her cause: justice.

"MIT Kids Press Black Innovators"--Cover. Young Jim West loves to pull apart whatever electronics he can get his hands on to see how they work. Those around him say there's no path for a kid like him to become a scientist, but Jim is determined to forge his own way. His knack for all things electric (and luck in landing a summer job offering the freedom to experiment) lead him to invent an important part of the devices we rely on every day.

To celebrate Eid, Abdullah's parents give him a cuddly teddy bear. The bear used to belong to Abdullah's dad, his abba, and it has a name, but Abba won't say what it is! Abdullah and his new bear become inseparable, but he can't guess what its name is. His siblings, friends and classmates all have suggestions -- Bertie, Katie, Olivia, Edward -- but none of them feels right. Then one night, when Abba tells a story from long ago in Pakistan, Abdullah remembers his family's traditions and has an idea.
