Two years ago, Zoe Washington helped clear Marcus’ name for a crime he didn’t commit. Now her birth father has finally been released from prison and to an outpouring of community support, so everything should be perfect. When Marcus reveals his dream of opening his own restaurant, Zoe becomes determined to help him achieve it—with her as his pastry chef of course. However, starting a new place is much more difficult than it looks, and Marcus is having a harder time re-entering society than anyone expected. Set on finding a solution, Zoe starts a podcast to bring light to the exonerees’ experiences and fundraise for their restaurant. After all, Zoe knows full well the power of using her voice. But with waning public interest in their story, will anyone still be listening?

In this Resource Guide you will find seven lessons that will engage your students while they learn about some of the important events in Canada's history that helped shape our current multicultural society. You will find support for teaching about Canada's past treatment of ethnic minorities and how to approach the topic of racism. As well, your students will learn about the important roles that these minorities have played in Canadian society.

Zoey has just read Alice in Wonderland. She and Lukas decide to create an Alice-in-Wonderland-like world filled with opposites, palindromes and tricky double negatives. With the help of their special guest, a psychologist and teacher who wrote a book in mirror writing, they try their hand at writing backwards just like the author of Alice in Wonderland sometimes did. Teams of kids match up pairs of palindromes in the game show. When Lukas programs Booboo Bot to say everything backwards, it sends Booboo Bot into a fit of hysterics. In the challenge, teams of kids have to follow commands filled with double negatives and opposites. It's not easy figuring out what to do, not do or not not do!

Bugz is caught between two worlds. In the real world, she's a shy and self-conscious Indigenous teen who faces the stresses of teenage angst and reserve life. But in the virtual world, her alter ego is not just confident but dominant in a massive multiplayer video game universe. Feng is a teen boy who has been sent from China to live with his aunt, a doctor on the reserve, after his online activity suggests he may be developing extremist sympathies. Meeting each other in real life, as well as in the virtual world, Bugz and Feng immediately relate to each other as outsiders and as avid gamers. As their connection is strengthened through their virtual adventures, they find they have much in common in the real world, too: both must decide what to do in the face of temptations and pitfalls, and both must grapple with the impact of family and community trauma. But betrayal threatens everything Bugz has built in the virtual world, as well as her relationships in the real world, and it will take all her newfound strength to restore her friendship with Feng and reconcile the parallel aspects of her life: the traditional and the mainstream, the east and the west, the real and the virtual.

And that's just the first of many surprises awaiting her. On arriving at the festival, Alice learns that she and her father are actually contestants on Culinary Combat, a new reality TV show hosted by Tom Truffleman, the most famous and fierce judge on TV!
From the Curio.ca streaming audio-visual collection. Today the wild prairie is a shadow of its former self. Temperate grasslands, as a whole, are now considered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to be the most endangered - and least protected - habitat type in the world. Prior to European settlement, North America's Great Plains were home to enormous, thundering herds of bison. Wolves and grizzly bears thrived at the top of the diverse food chain in this vast, unobstructed landscape. It truly was, as the region is often called, the Serengeti of North America. Though much has been lost, there is still enough wildness that exists in these flatlands to inspire some optimism. And there are people across the Canadian prairies working to help keep them wild.

Zoey and Lukas explore cryptology and secret ways of communicating as they channel their inner spies. Great spies need great mental and physical skills, so the challenge has teams of kids run through an obstacle course with puzzles to solve before each obstacle. In the game show, kids answer spy-related questions and match the letters of their answers to the numbers on a cipher wheel. A computer programmer comes by and shows how he uses codes in his job. He has Zoey and Lukas decipher some pixel art code by using coloured post-its to follow a pattern and make a picture. Real kids tell us their funny spy code names. When Lukas programs Booboo Bot to decipher a secret code language he made up, Booboo Bot loses his cool.

"In Cultivating Genius, Dr. Gholdy E. Muhammad presents a four-layered equity framework--one that is grounded in history and restores excellence in literacy education. This framework, which she names Historically Responsive Literacy, was derived from the study of literacy development within 9th-century Black literacy societies. The framework is essential and universal for all students, especially youth of color, who traditionally have been marginalized in learning standards, school policies, and classroom practices. The equity framework will help educators teach and lead toward the following learning goals or pursuits: Identity Development--Helping youth to make sense of themselves and others, Skill Development-- Developing proficiencies across the academic disciplines, Intellectual Development--Gaining knowledge and becoming smarter, [and] Criticality--Learning and developing the ability to read texts (including print and social contexts) to understand power, equity, and anti-oppression. When these four learning pursuits are taught together--through the Historically Responsive Literacy Framework, all students receive profound opportunities for personal, intellectual, and academic success...

Loon Dreaming opens with loons gracefully riding the waves. Then suddenly we see the world through the eyes of one of these spectacular birds. We dive down deep into the waters in pursuit of fish, launch skyward from the water and fly high over the busy highways and sprawling subdivisions that scar the natural world--before gently splashing down on a secluded lake. The artistry of Iriz Pääbo and her creative use of digital technology are a magical mix! A forest transforms into an explosion of colour, the passion of loons becomes palpable, and their hunting call resonates. A film without words.
