Humans have been keeping secrets for generations and using cryptology to make sure those secrets don't fall into the wrong hands. From the development of ancient Greek ciphers, to the creation of the Enigma and today's CRISPR technology, codes and codebreakers have changed the course of history. Today cryptology addresses cybersecurity and the ethics of hacking our own genetic code. Cracking the Code reveals the history of codes, explores why humans keep secrets and introduces us to coding heroes like the Navajo Code Talkers from World War II. Codes have defined human history and will map our digital future. Will you be the next codebreaker to unlock the mysteries behind the codes that shape our world?

Ursula Franklin was a brave and brilliant woman. Born in Germany with Jewish ancestry, she survived the Holocaust while many in her family did not. She became a physicist and an engineer at a time when women were not welcome in academics. These experiences shaped Ursula, and she went on to stand up for equality, for peace, and for the protection of the environment and the vulnerable throughout her life. Ursula Franklin was also a caring mother, as her daughter Monica Franklin shows in the stories here. Ursula was celebrated in her lifetime, receiving both the Order of Canada and the Pearson Peace Medal. Today she has not only a street but a school named after her in Toronto, where children can learn to remain undaunted despite what hardships we face—to pursue our dreams while standing up for what is right—under the shelter of her name.

Montreal's network of bicycle paths and the love Quebeckers have for the bicycle might be completely different today if it weren't for one exceptional man and his merry bunch of revolutionary cyclists. Bicycle Bob and the Bike Revolution follows the story of Robert Silverman and Claire Morissette, who introduced what appeared to be crazy ideas about sustainable mobility in a world that was, at that time, completely dominated by gas cars. This band of bike misfits used hilarious peaceful protests aimed at rethinking the car's place at the heart of a gas-guzzling carbon economy and succeeded in orchestrating a complete shift towards the bicycle.
