From the Curio channel: News in Review. When the United States declared it would withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by September 2021, Canada came under pressure to evacuate its allies. Thousands of Afghans who had assisted both Canada and the U.S. with the war effort would be at risk if they remained in the country. But as U.S. troops withdrew, Taliban forces were able to move into the vacuum, quickly regaining territory. When the air bridge closed many were left behind.

From the Curio channel: News in Review. Many infectious disease experts believe Canada should be testing everyone for COVID-19 to find out who is contagious, and not just the people who have symptoms. They say rapid testing may be one of the tools that could help. They're cheaper, faster and can be used at home. Many countries around the world use rapid tests. But Health Canada has been slow to approve their use here. It argues that they are not as accurate as the PCR test. This despite the Centers for Disease Control having stated that rapid tests are right up to 80 per cent of the time. So is Canada's COVID testing all wrong?

From the Curio channel: News in Review. More people are lonely than ever before. Studies show that one in five Canadians identify as being lonely. Loneliness is more than a feeling of occasional solitude - it's a prolonged feeling of perceived isolation. While long seen as being bad for mental health, loneliness is now recognized as being physically harmful too. It's being called the silent killer - considered by some experts as being more harmful than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In fact, loneliness is now linked to heart disease, depression, obesity and other life-threatening conditions. So why in our highly connected world are we so lonely? And what can we do about it?
