According to scientists, Canada's northern climate is warming almost three times faster than the global average. As things warm up, the permafrost in the North -- that frozen underlying layer of ground -- is also melting. And that's threatening the way of life for many who live there. Loneliness is more than a feeling of occasional solitude - it's a prolonged feeling of perceived isolation. While long seen as being bad for mental health, loneliness is now recognized as being physically harmful too. It's being called the silent killer - considered by some experts as being more harmful than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In fact, loneliness is now linked to heart disease, depression, obesity and other life-threatening conditions. So why in our highly connected world are we so lonely? And what can we do about it?

The novel Hotline is about Muna Heddad, a widow and mother who has left behind a civil war in Lebanon and is living in Montreal in the 1980s. The only work she can find is as a hotline operator at a weight-loss centre where she fields calls from people responding to ads in magazines or on TV. These strangers have so much to say about their challenges, from marriages gone bad to personal inadequacies. Although her life in Canada is filled with invisible barriers, Muna is privy to her clients' deepest secrets.
