A virus enters a host cell by attaching to proteins on its surface. The lytic and lysogenic cycles are the ways viruses exploit a host cell on which they depend for replication. For example, in the lytic cycle the fully formed herpes simplex virus bursts cells and are seen as a cold sore. DNA viruses can lie dormant within cells in the lysogenic cycle until a trigger switches on some of the viral sequence's genes.

The bison are gone, settlers from the East are arriving daily, and the Métis and First Nations of the Northwest face hunger and uncertainty as their traditional way of life is threatened. The Canadian government has ignored their petitions, but hope rises when Louis Riel returns to help. However, battles between Canadian forces and the Métis and their allies lead to a defeat at Batoche.

In 1687, Isaac Newton explained that movement was caused by forces applied in a straight line. However, movement could not be calculated when influenced by other objects. Carl Friedrich Gauss discovered normal distribution - in normal conditions an ordinary event was more likely to occur than an extraordinary one. His results were explained with a Gaussian curve. The way an object's movement is affected by other objects it touches is known as chaos. There is a higher chance an object will follow the most probable path, but you can never calculate its exact path. In 1890 Henri Poincare reduced the number of uncertainties tied to random events. In the 1960's meteorologist Edward Lorenz mastered chaos with a model that combined statistics and probability. Many aspects of our world are impacted by chaos, but calculations can help reduce the uncertainty of these chaotic events.

When a deadly Fly Flu sweeps the globe, it leaves a shell of the world that once was. Among the survivors are eighteen-year-old Nico and her dog, on a voyage devised by Nico's father to find a mythical portal; a young artist named Kit, raised in an old abandoned cinema; and the enigmatic Deliverer, who lives Life after Life in an attempt to put the world back together. As swarms of infected Flies roam the earth, these few survivors navigate the woods of post-apocalyptic New England, meeting others along the way, each on their own quest to find life and love in a world gone dark. The Electric Kingdom is a sweeping exploration of art, storytelling, eternal life, and above all, a testament to the notion that even in an exterminated world, one person might find beauty in another.

Reads from right to left. White Blood Cell, Red Blood Cell, Macrophage, and the cute little Platelets face a threat unlike anything they've ever dealt with before: COVID-19! But even this threat can be defeated, as long as everyone works together. The uplifting and informative series comes to a close with one last tour of the hardworking body, featuring "left shift" in the blood, retinal degeneration, and a simple bump on the noggin. But, of course, as long as there's a job to do, this team won't quit!

Success or failure in the kitchen depends on three elements interacting with each other: ingredients, time, and temperature. Measuring these three elements accurately helps ensure the end result is delicious food. Kitchen Math: Measuring presents measuring basics with humor and fun: • Units of measurement • Common abbreviations • Measuring tools and techniques • Proper measuring techniques for dry, solid, and liquid ingredients • Basic recipe conversion and cost comparisons

Includes index. Discover the extraordinary world of viruses, from their creation and transmission to vaccination. If we didn't know it before, we certainly know it now: viruses can be powerful--so powerful, in fact, that they can hold the world in their grip for months at a time. But what exactly is a virus? Where do they come from and what do they do to our bodies? How do they spread, and what can we do to protect ourselves?
