From the Curio channel: News in Review. Global warming is having a massive impact on the planet. In October 2018, the world's leading climate scientists met and warned that there are only a dozen years to limit global warming. They predict urgent change is needed or the planet is in peril. Much of that warming can be linked to human activity. Glaciers are barometers of climate change and their melts result in sea levels rising, causing potentially catastrophic results for coastal communities. The CBC's Susan Ormiston met with a glacier expert in the Saint Elias Mountains in Yukon to find out what she was seeing in terms of ice field melt.

From the Curio channel: News in Review. More people are lonely than ever before. Studies show that one in five Canadians identify as being lonely. Loneliness is more than a feeling of occasional solitude - it's a prolonged feeling of perceived isolation. While long seen as being bad for mental health, loneliness is now recognized as being physically harmful too. It's being called the silent killer - considered by some experts as being more harmful than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. In fact, loneliness is now linked to heart disease, depression, obesity and other life-threatening conditions. So why in our highly connected world are we so lonely? And what can we do about it?

Did you know that anybody can be an astronaut? Teamwork and an excitement for science are key ingredients to being an Astronaut! Commander Herrington believes our ancestors worked together and for future generations – which is an important part of being an Indigenous Scientists. Our ancestors studied the cosmos and had much astronomy knowledge, often told through story. We even build our own forms of observatories.

Get a peek into what happens at an Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) with Blackfoot Scientist Corey Gray who studies blackholes and gravitational waves. And he works with his mother, translating science documents into Blackfoot. Speaking of gravitational waves, the Earth is like one big magnet and Kai hacks gravity with some magnets. In our animation story, Kokum shares about how the North Star helped her when she was a young girl.

Vancouver Island is the ancestral land of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, who have stewarded its diverse landscapes and seas since time immemorial. Rachel, Hayden, and Daniel are working with the Tla-O-Qui-Aht First Nation to help Indigenous youth reconnect with the land. The Warrior programme teaches wilderness and life skills, while the Nuu-chah-nulth surfing project reclaims surfing as Indigenous, building confidence and self-worth. These initiatives reflect the resilience and creativity of west coast Indigenous communities as they empower youth and preserve cultural heritage.
