Into the Weeds: Dewayne "Lee" Johnson vs. Monsanto Company follows former groundskeeper Johnson and his fight against Monsanto, a multinational agrochemical corporation acquired by German pharmaceutical giant Bayer in 2018. Johnson's case was the first to go to trial in a series of lawsuits involving tens of thousands of plaintiffs who claim that Monsanto's weed killer Roundup (and its other glyphosate-based herbicide Ranger Pro) caused their cancer. Bayer maintains that it's safe to use. The documentary follows the groundbreaking trial, including the release of the Monsanto Papers - internal documents which reveal that, for decades, Monsanto had been influencing studies about glyphosate's potential to cause cancer. The film introduces other plaintiffs whose lives have been upended by their non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnoses, while also looking into the widespread and systemic effects of the world's most widely used herbicide.

The LGBT Purge and the fight for equal rights in Canada

From the 1950s to 1980s, the Canadian government persecuted LGBTQ+ employees and tried to erase them from the military, the RCMP and the civil service under the guise that they were a "security risk", an event that became known as the LGBT Purge. Those who were suspected of being homosexual were put under government surveillance, interrogated and intimidated. They were fired from their jobs. Many quit to avoid being exposed. Some committed suicide as a result. In the 1980s, victims of the Purge fought back with a class-action suit against the government that helped shed light on the systemic discrimination that members of the LGBTQ+ community faced from the government and the rest of society. In 2017, the federal government issued a formal apology on behalf of the government and Canadian society for the treatment of members of the LGBTQ+ community. In this highly visual book, author Ken Setterington presents the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights using photographs, first-person accounts and excerpts from archival documents. Significant events in the struggle include the establishment of Pride parades, the Bathhouse Raids, the decriminalization of homosexuality, the passing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the LGBT Purge and the legalization of same-sex marriage. While the government's formal acknowledgement of past injustices started Canada on a better path toward equality, there is still work to be done.

Phantom limb is a condition in which someone who has lost a part of their body continues to experience phantom sensations coming from that body part. Despite the name, phantom limb doesn't only occur in limbs, and has also been recorded after the loss of other body parts like breasts, genitals, and even teeth. Phantom sensations are thought to be experienced by almost all amputees, and most suffer from some degree of phantom pain.

It halted immigration from China - immigration the government had welcomed when labour was required for the transcontinental railway. Although Canadian immigration policy in the early 20th century was generally restrictive, the Chinese were the only race excluded. Fewer than 50 Chinese immigrants were allowed into the country between 1923 and 1946, and those already living in Canada were required to register with the government.

But with establishment of the Negro National League in 1920, African-American baseball players had a chance to claim the national pastime as their own. In 1946 the colour line was finally broken when the Brooklyn Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson to the major league. By 1959 every major league team had a Black player on the roster. Note: The use of the term "Negro" in this video is historically accurate for the early 20th century when it replaced the term "coloured". The Negro leagues were an immense source of pride for Black America.
