In 1687, Isaac Newton explained that movement was caused by forces applied in a straight line. However, movement could not be calculated when influenced by other objects. Carl Friedrich Gauss discovered normal distribution - in normal conditions an ordinary event was more likely to occur than an extraordinary one. His results were explained with a Gaussian curve. The way an object's movement is affected by other objects it touches is known as chaos. There is a higher chance an object will follow the most probable path, but you can never calculate its exact path. In 1890 Henri Poincare reduced the number of uncertainties tied to random events. In the 1960's meteorologist Edward Lorenz mastered chaos with a model that combined statistics and probability. Many aspects of our world are impacted by chaos, but calculations can help reduce the uncertainty of these chaotic events.

When men started writing they began to use symbols to represent units or small bundles of units. These symbols were called numerals, or numbers, and represent specific quantities. In 628, Brahmagupta formalized Zero (0), which is a symbol and a number. Roman numerals were found to be limiting and time consuming, so the Indians proposed using fewer symbols and changing their order. They created a type of grammar for mathematics, based on the number 10, that would be adopted by the entire world. Brahmagupta explained that numbers that were less than zero could also be counted, called negative numbers. All these numbers represented whole quantities, so were called whole numbers. Fractions were invented to indicate part of a whole number, with the parts of the whole being called the numerator, and its equally divided pieces the denominator. Based on the Latin word ratio, these were called rational numbers. In 1427, Al Kashi proposed writing these numbers as decimal fractions, which was later simplified by Simon Stevin and then again by John Napier to be known as a decimal.

Your brain, an amazing, powerful organ, enables you to think, learn, create and feel emotions, controlling every blink, breath and heartbeat. Faster than any computer, the brain stores memories while you sleep. Protected by the skull, the brain's neurons (nerve cells) send electrochemical messages to the body via the nervous system. We learn about the cerebrum, cerebra, brain stem, hemispheres, gyre indents, dendrites, axons, sensory neurons, motor neurons, neuroscience, strokes, and how to keep your brain healthy.

In the mid 19th century, Louis Pasteur noticed that placing microscopic mushrooms near bacteria slowed down their growth. In 1927, Charles Latouche began studying different fungi and mold at St. Mary's Hospital. The airborne spores from the mushrooms were not well contained and traveled from the floor below to the lab of Alexander Fleming who was studying Staphylococcus Bacteria, which caused many illnesses. He noticed that the fungus that invaded his lab had almost destroyed the Staphylococcus colonies. The killer fungus was identified as Penicillium notatum, and it destroyed many different bacteria. In 1940, Ernst Chain and Howard Florey isolated and purified the active substance produced by the fungus: Penicillin. During WWII they used a melon with the right kind of mold to create enough penicillin to make medicine and commercialize it to treat soldiers and illnesses like pneumonia and meningitis. Penicillin kills bacterial growth, which makes it an antibiotic. Today the study of fingi comtinues.

Harry's 6th year at Hogwarts begins, and it feels like a reassuring place to return to after the strange events of the summer. Disappearances, murder and an ominous chilling mist which swirls both through the Muggle and wizarding worlds are harbingers of more sinister purpose. Voldemort's army is swelling, and with it the Death Eaters are growing bolder and more deadly. Suspicions are rife, and allegiances questioned as even the safest havens cease to feel secure from the Dark wizards. As the storm gathers strength, Harry must face the terrifying truth of his destiny.
