Tsá Tué Biosphere Reserve, NT: Striking Balance Series 2.


Troubled by a history of uranium mining, the Sahtu Dene of Great Bear Lake, NWT, create North America's largest biosphere reserve to protect its pristine waters for all of humanity. At the edge of the Arctic Circle, Sahtu Lake (Great Bear Lake) is earth's largest remaining fully functioning cold fresh-water ecosystem. This lake was spared the environmental impacts of colonization with no commercial logging, fishing, mining, or hunting, until in 1942 it became one of the first sources of uranium ore in North America. Until 1960 mine workers extracted uranium not knowing about its toxicity. Some 740,000 tonnes of tailings were dumped into the lake. Residential schools robbed children of their culture, and hunting was outlawed for the Dene. In the Dene legend of The Waterheart, a man finds Tudza, a heart that gives life to the lake. Sahtuot'ine negotiations led to the 1993 Sahtu Dene and Métis Land Claim Agreement, and self-government in 2016. The Great Bear Watershed was declared a UN Biosphere Reserve, the first ever created by an indigenous community. Déline is a fly-in community with expensive groceries; "country foods" are critical to the health, well-being and independence of the Sahtu. Traditional environmental management practices govern their ways, and elders are teaching ancestral skills, spiritual respect for the ecosystem and their native language to the youth. Stewardship of the lake has its challenges. Sportfishing depleted the lake trout population so catch and release sports fishing has taken its place. When fish are dissected for scientific study, they are used later as food. Climate change is clearly affecting the lake ecosystem, but the unique interspecies diversity of its fish indicates that they might adapt. Cleanup of former mine sites is critical to the lake's health. What they have accomplished here is impressive, and trained Guardians will truly know the land and understand the importance of the water.

Hollie, like all other girls in her community, has some big decisions ahead of her. And the new responsibilities in her approaching adulthood are symbolized by the making of her first dress. This rite of passage for a young Mennonite girl is recounted by Hollie's mother Deborah, whose own mother helped her cut and sew her first dress at 15, as she describes their community's traditions of dressmaking.

In the second part of our series finale, Anne, Nick, Shania and all the androids successfully defend themselves against Ada and the Pal 2.0s. While they're celebrating, Anne's mom's hologram machine starts to work and plays the message for Anne from her mother. It's an emotional moment as Anne sees her mother for the first time. However, yet again, before the message can play out in full, the machine malfunctions again. This time, before Anne can fix it, Ada reveals that they haven't won quite yet -- she's taken Nick's mom hostage and demands a trade: Mom for Pal. Anne sacrifices her mom's machine to create a Pal hologram and fools Ada into destroying her Pal 2.0s. Ada is finally beaten. After that, Anne decides to send the androids out into the world as her mom's message inspired her to share her gifts with everyone. She realizes the world deserves to know about the androids.

Temperate grasslands, as a whole, are now considered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to be the most endangered - and least protected - habitat type in the world. Prior to European settlement, North America's Great Plains were home to enormous, thundering herds of bison. Wolves and grizzly bears thrived at the top of the diverse food chain in this vast, unobstructed landscape. It truly was, as the region is often called, the Serengeti of North America. Though much has been lost, there is still enough wildness that exists in these flatlands to inspire some optimism. And there are people across the Canadian prairies working to help keep them wild.
