From the Curio channel: News in Review. The boreal forest is often referred to as Canada's lungs when it comes to halting climate change. The forest takes in billions of tons of carbon in exchange for oxygen. But in 2023, Canada saw an unprecedented year of forest fires, releasing tons of that CO2 back into the atmosphere. So what's the impact? Is climate change creating the perfect storm for even more devastating wildfires?

"Merci Suárez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don't have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci's school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna's jealousy. Things aren't going well at home, either: Merci's grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately -- forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what's going on, so she's left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school."--Provided by publish.

Songwriter Christa Couture is an award-winning performing and recording artist, non-fiction writer and broadcaster. She is also proudly Indigenous (Cree and Scandinavian), queer, and a mom. Her seventh album Safe Harbour was released in 2020. Christa is a frequent contributor to CBC Radio and was the weekday afternoon host on Toronto's 106.5 ELMNT FM. In this episode, Christa sets out to create a new song that speaks to the harrowing journey the characters face in Cherie Dimaline's award-winning book "The Marrow Thieves". Inspired by the theme of Indigenous resilience in the book and seeing that play out in the resilient Indigenous people around her she says, "You don't know if you have resilience unless you need to call on it, unless you are suffering. And then you discover the parts of you that come out to help you survive." Métis writer and activist Cherie Dimaline reads excerpts from her book, explaining that it's important to give Indigenous youth a vision of the future and a hopeful tomorrow. Part of the reason she wrote the book was to empower youth. "I wanted to build a world where they were absolutely everything. Where they were the heroes - where they were exactly what we needed to survive because I honestly believe that. They're heroes, we need them, we desperately need them." Part of being resilient is coming together as a community and collaboratively creating things so that all are unified and stronger for it.

From the Curio channel: News in Review. Climate on this planet is always changing. Over hundreds of thousands of years there have been heating and cooling events, with at least five ice ages. Most of these variations can be attributed to Earth's orbit, the sun's radiation and the planet heating. However, since the 19th century scientists believe that the rapid heating of the earth is a result of man-made climate change. Greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun and that causes the earth to warm. That in turn leads to melting ice caps and global temperatures rising. The summer of 2018 saw extremely hot temperatures across the northern hemisphere. From deadly heat waves across Asia, Europe and Great Britain to killer humidity in eastern North America and extremely dry conditions in the normally wet west. Is this the new normal? And can these conditions be attributed to climate change?

In winter, Great Lakes animals must deal with extreme temperatures. Divers explore the lakebed where a colossal ice sheet once ground into North America's bedrock, leaving five giant lakes when it melted. Each year the ice returns, challenging life. A powerful jet stream dip creates huge ice storms, the world's largest freshwater waves, and lake effect snow. Life has adapted. Otters frolic beneath Lake Huron's ice surface; giant freshwater cod siwm and mate in the frigid waters; ravens outwit bald eagles and wolves, feeding on a deer; snow provides insulation for new-born black bears; the huge paws of a Canadian lynx help it move in deep snow; and the ultra-violet fur of flying squirrels deters predators. But some creatures are suffering due to the shorter, warmer winters. A rare wolverine is threatened by the warming climate and Great Lakes moose are declining in numbers. Ice and snow created North America's Great Lakes and its species have evolved to survive the harsh elements. In this warming world, the future of life in the Great Lakes will be shaped by one species - us.
