A recent immigrant from China, Hua Wu escapes the tedium of her Chinatown restaurant job and the loneliness of her crowded New York City tenement when she is hired by Jane, a museum curator of Asian art, and her theater critic husband to become the nanny of Lily, their recently adopted young daughter from China.
