It's 1914, the Golden Age of Ocean Travel. Millions of passengers cross the Atlantic: rich and poor, immigrants and business people. It's relatively cheap, comfortable, and usually safe. But for 1,012 people aboard the Empress of Ireland, it proved fatal, and the accident that took their lives did not occur on the storm-tossed waters of the North Atlantic, but in the St. Lawrence River, which connects Quebec City to the ocean.
